Applications of wide bandgap devices in energy infrastructure

Solar inverters and electric vehicles are at the forefront of green technology. ON Semiconductor and KEMET are key players in solving for the needs of technological advancements in Wide Bandgap applications that deal with these technologies. Below are specific application examples of how these innovative manufacturers are addressing these markets.

Solar Inverter

In any solar installation, a solar inverter will need to be used to invert the DC voltage from the PV modules to an AC voltage that can be fed into the grid. There are many ways this solar inverter can be implemented. The industry first started using a central system that takes all of the PV modules or large amount and feeds them into a single DC-AC inverter to then be transferred to the grid. Recently central systems have become less popular because a single-point failure can cause an entire system failure. Replacing these central systems are string inverters that either do a DC/DC conversion per string feeding into a central DC/AC inverter or do the full DC/AC inverting per string; the latter is the most common.

EV Charging Station

Charging Stations are now becoming a major part of the Transportation Infrastructure Network. The ability of the Electric Vehicle Service Equipment (EVSE) to effectively charge the traction Batteries in Plug-In Electric Vehicles (PEV) in a timely fashion is the main driving force for developing high power, high performance, and full-featured protection ev (off-board) chargers. The EV charging application requires high voltage, high current and high performance in an elevated temperature environment.
